Liver Transplantation The Liver transplant program at the University of Toronto began in 1985 and has grown into the largest program in Canada. To date we have performed over 700 procedures with 5-year survival in excess of 75%. We presently perform 90-100 transplants per year with 80% of activity adult transplantation and 20% pediatric. Adult transplantation is performed at the Toronto Hospital while pediatric procedures are performed at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. The close proximity but separate infrastructure of the two hospitals provides an ideal environment for both split and living related liver transplantation. The liver transplant program is managed jointly by surgeons and hepatologists, which creates an optimal environment for the training of residents and fellows. An American Society of Transplant Surgeons accredited fellowship in liver transplantation is offered in association with a fellowship in advanced Hepatobiliary surgery. The liver transplant program at the University of Toronto is active in both clinical and basic science research. Almost all patients are enrolled in clinical trials as we continue to seek improvements to patient care. Our basic science research is headed by Dr. Gary Levy and is strongly supported by both granting agencies and industry. The liver transplant program at the University of Toronto is constantly changing as the field of transplantation itself evolves. We remain committed to providing excellence in patient care while continuing to expand our understanding of transplantation through research. |
